In building work it is most important firstly for a surveyor to check and verify plot limit corners and it's given distance as per design. Then a building surveyor needs to cross check all the inside building designs and its main foundations and columns to make sure the drawing is correct.

Types of building Works:

Once these steps are clear a surveyor should start giving them markings for gridlines X and Y.Once X,Y lines fixed by surveyor then cross check it from plot limit lines. If these grid line distance is ok then he should start marking Foundation PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) points. These pcc marking should be wider like 10 cm bigger both sides. Also, a building surveyor should give the elevation for the pcc markings.

Building Elevations:

Building elevation should be exactly as per the design. If not there can be big issue since the elevations needs to have 300 mm higher than the road mostly. If in the starting the level, you given is incorrect then the whole building can be considered as rejected. So, the elevation points have to be correct 100%. And once pcc poured then you have a plain surface to start marking for foundations.

A building surveyor is responsible for horizontally and vertically dimensions as per the design. If something is not matching with existing levels or it seems to be incorrect. He needs to cross check and verify with Municipality surveyors and inform them in order to re-check the points.

High Rise Building Columns Marking

When a building marks the points for foundation (footings) he needs to check and fix the elevation for footings. After fixing the points for footing carpenters will start to fix shutters and then steel bars should be installed as per shop drawings given by consultants. Footing is the base foundation of any building from where column for the main building starts. And this column sometimes goes up straight to the building top. Some can be finish till 5 ,10 or 20th floor in high rise buildings. A building surveyor's responsibility is to keep less tolerance plumb of these column. A purpose of making columns in buildings is to provide a good strength to the building. If the columns plumbness vertically moved one side the strength can be less. And it effects the building structure. So, a building surveyors' high responsibility is to use specific control stations for this work.

Control Point Establishment:

Control point establishment should be checked 3 times minimum and close it using angles and horizontal measurements. If the control points have error, then the building distances can be different.

Building Surveyor Responsibilities

After raising the column, a building surveyor should fix the level for slab bottom. Following the same elevation scaffolders will make a platform and then carpenter will take dimension till slab bottom. So they will fix the plywood for the whole slab. After plywood fixation the surveyor should cross check the whole slab bottom level whether it is correct or not.

And after this step a building surveyor should fix the slab designs. In the slab design sometimes if a building has balcony or any type of other designs curves that also a surveyor should fix. Gridlines are most important while making buildings. Because it is the reference for different services like electric cables connection and plumbing works from which we can take. Mostly in the drawings all dimensions given from gridlines. So a surveyor should fix the gridlines for different purpose in order to take dimensions.

After all the slab will be casted and then the same procedure we should follow like column markings then slab levels and grid lines etc.
